Dr. Patty Alvey
Dr. Alvey has worked in the education, fine art and advertising industries with hundreds of creative projects to her credit. She has a special interest in improving creative communication for nonprofits. Alvey was invited to come to SMU in 2002 to become the Distinguished Chair and Director of SMU’s Temerlin Advertising Institute, the first endowed institute for Advertising in the U.S.
Alvey has led the creation of rigorous admissions processes; modernizing of the undergraduate advertising curriculum; growth of an international award-winning creative portfolio program; launch of an education-abroad program in India; and the design and launch of SMU’s first Master of Arts in Advertising degree, an innovative graduate program that combines global corporate and social responsibility with international advertising.
Prior moving to Dallas and SMU, Alvey was Director of the Creative Advertising Portfolio Program at the University of Texas at Austin and then Executive Director at the Adcenter at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Now, as Director of Assessment and Accreditation for SMU, she works to promote and foster a culture of evidence and assessment across the University. Working with faculty and staff, she provides leadership in designing and implementing institution-wide programs directed toward continuous improvement. She is the University’s liaison to the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Colleges – the regional accrediting agency reporting to the U.S. Department of Education. In that role, Alvey works on assessment policy development, implementation and review.
